Stakes for mussel cultivation

Some 50 million kilos of mussels are harvested in the Netherlands every year. Part of Dutch mussel farming takes place in the Wadden Sea.

There are different ways of cultivating mussels. For hanging culture, mussel farmers use a so-called substrate, something that mussel larvae can cling to. In nature, this could be rocks, for example. In the case of mussel farming, these fluffy ropes form the substrate. To these, the larvae attach themselves, and grow into mussel seed. The ropes are stretched between mussel poles. Herstaco proudly supplies mussel poles to various local mussel farmers.
